Canadian Pilot Plant
Municipal Wastewater Pilot Plant Constructed May 2011
Location:
Town of Orangeville Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) (North of Toronto)
Funded by:
Xogen Technologies Inc. and Sustainable Development Technology Canada
Consortium:
Xogen Technologies Inc. - Lead
Town of Orangeville – Pilot Plant Host
Orangeville Hydro – Energy Metering and Monitoring
University of Toronto – Product Developer; power supply & electrodes
Linde Canada Limited – Off gas characterization & monitoring
The overall objective of the pilot plant is to demonstrate, at pre-commercial scale, that Xogen's electrochemical system can achieve effluent quality criteria consistently and reliably at total life cycle costs which are lower than conventional biological systems. The test program will determine what level of performance can be achieved, how this performance can be optimized by varying operating parameters and demonstrate that typical regulatory parameters can be consistently met. Data collected during operation will be used to determine scale-up criteria for the design of the first commercial installation of the technology. Measuring and monitoring of the hydrogen oxygen off gas will demonstrate the technical feasibility and economics of the uses for this gas; i.e. energy recovery or industrial gas marketing and distribution. Long term operational data will be used to evaluate the reliability of the system and to estimate maintenance costs including replacement of the electrodes. All of this information will ultimately be used to develop refined total life cost of ownership for the process and to certify the technology for permitting in Canada and the United States. This plant is also being used to demonstrate operability and performance to potential industrial customers.
